the seattle collegian print newspaper

overview

The Seattle Collegian has a long history of being the school paper for Seattle Central College. My internship was with The Seattle Collegian, and one of my duties was creating the first print edition of the newspaper since 2019 due to COVID-19.

Challenge

I had never made a newspaper, but used lessons learned from our magazine class (see The Riff magazine page). Because this would take time to figure out on top of my coursework, we made a Best of 2024 edition to showcase articles from the previous year. This also included editing photos to ensure they were print-ready.

solution

This was a challenging project for me, but it was very satisfying when it was completed. The staff at The Seattle Collegian were thrilled; this had been a project that had been previously discussed but not brought to fruition. I was delighted to take on this unique project as part of my internship. I learned InDesign in more depth, as that was the primary program I needed, and personally communicated with the printer to finalize the project.
